The AI Tiger

We released it. We rode it. We fed it. We taught it to hunt. Now we have to live with it.
This is the final question of the AI Tiger series — not whether AI will advance. Assume it does. Assume models become smarter, agents become more autonomous, compute becomes cheaper, robots become capable, AI becomes embedded in everything.
Then what happens to us?
I see four possible futures.
The AI oligarchy
Intelligence becomes concentrated. A handful of companies control the models. A handful control the chips. A handful control the cloud. A handful control the data. And eventually, a handful control the most valuable resource on Earth: intelligence itself.
The richest companies may no longer be the ones that own the most factories. They may be the ones that own the machines that think. That creates a frightening possibility — AI doesn't democratize intelligence. It concentrates it. A few organizations could hold more economic and strategic power than many governments.
The question becomes: who regulates the companies that effectively control intelligence itself?
The age of abundance
But there is another future — a radically better one.
AI dramatically accelerates scientific discovery. New drugs arrive faster. Energy becomes cheaper. Education becomes personalized. Engineering becomes dramatically more productive. Small companies gain capabilities that previously required thousands of employees. A doctor has an AI team. A scientist has an AI laboratory. A student has an AI tutor. An entrepreneur has an AI workforce.
Productivity explodes. The cost of intelligence collapses. And perhaps the greatest transformation is this: for the first time in human history, intelligence becomes abundant.
Perhaps the Tiger isn't our enemy. Perhaps it becomes the engine of the greatest economic expansion humanity has ever experienced.
The great disruption
There is a third possibility: AI works — too well.
Millions of tasks become automated faster than societies can adapt. Some professions disappear. Entire business models collapse. Education systems struggle to keep up. Governments struggle with taxation and employment. The social contract begins to crack.
The uncomfortable question becomes: what happens when productivity rises faster than people's ability to find economic purpose? The transition could be painful — not because AI failed, but because AI succeeded faster than humans could adapt. This may be the most underestimated risk. The problem isn't unemployment alone. It is identity, purpose, status, and social stability.
The AI Cold War
And then there is geopolitics. America. China. Europe. India. The Gulf. And others. Each wants AI capability, compute, chips, energy, talent, strategic independence — because whoever controls advanced intelligence may gain enormous economic, scientific, military, and geopolitical leverage.
This creates a new kind of arms race. Not just nuclear. Not just military. An intelligence race. And unlike nuclear weapons, AI can exist everywhere — in data centers, laptops, phones, robots, satellites, military systems, open-source communities. The Tiger is not sitting in one country's cage. It is everywhere.
So what do we do?
Maybe the answer isn't to kill the Tiger. Maybe that isn't possible. Maybe the answer is to learn how to live with it — and that requires something humanity has historically struggled with: cooperation before crisis.
We may need global AI governance — countries cooperating on the highest-risk AI capabilities. AI treaties — international agreements around autonomous weapons, catastrophic misuse, and frontier systems. Compute controls — monitoring and governing access to extreme-scale AI infrastructure where appropriate. Open-source balance — preventing intelligence from becoming exclusively controlled by a handful of corporations, while managing the risks of uncontrolled capability distribution. Human-in-the-loop systems, especially where AI decisions can cause irreversible consequences. And AI constitutional frameworks — giving powerful AI systems explicit principles, boundaries, rights, responsibilities, and constraints.
None of these will be perfect. None will stop AI. They don't need to. The objective isn't to stop the Tiger. It is to make sure the Tiger doesn't decide where humanity goes.
The paradox
Here is what fascinates me most.
For thousands of years, humans competed to become more intelligent. Now we may be creating something that can become more intelligent than us — and we are doing it voluntarily. We are spending trillions. Building enormous computing infrastructure. Connecting it to the world's information. Giving it tools. Giving it memory. Giving it autonomy. Giving it access to our businesses. And increasingly, giving it the ability to act.
We are essentially building another form of intelligence and then asking: how do we make sure it behaves? That may be the defining question of this century.
My view
I don't believe the future is predetermined. The AI Oligarchy is possible. The Age of Abundance is possible. The Great Disruption is possible. The AI Cold War is possible. And perhaps all four happen simultaneously — different countries, different industries, different societies, different outcomes.
But there is one thing I believe strongly: the future of AI will not be determined by AI alone. It will be determined by the choices humans make around it — who controls it, who benefits from it, who regulates it, who gets access to it, and ultimately, who remains accountable for it.
We began this series with a simple idea: the AI Tiger has been released.
We watched it grow. We rode it. We fed it. We taught it to hunt. We took it to war. We tried to put it back in the cage.
And now we've reached the most uncomfortable conclusion of all seven parts: the cage may never have been the answer. Perhaps the real challenge isn't controlling the Tiger. It's learning to coexist with something that could become more powerful than anything humanity has ever created.
Will AI create the greatest prosperity in human history — or the greatest concentration of power ever assembled? Can humanity cooperate before competition forces its hand? Ten years from now, who will own the Tiger?
I don't know. Nobody does yet.
But there's one more question, and it's the one I keep coming back to — the one none of the others quite capture:
What if nobody owns the Tiger at all?
Not a company. Not a government. Not a coalition of nations. Not even the people who built it.
That isn't a question I can answer at the end of an article. It may be the actual question of this century.
